LUCUA SOUTH at Osaka Station: Japan''s Largest Character Zone Opens in Two Phases
LUCUA SOUTH, the third building in the LUCUA Osaka complex, opened its first phase on 5 April 2026 in the JR Osaka Station South Gate Building, directly above Daimaru Umeda. The first phase carries over 34 carry-over stores across floors 13F to 16F, including the existing Pokemon Center Osaka, Nintendo Osaka, and ONE PIECE Mugiwara Store that relocated from Daimaru. The bigger story is what arrives this autumn. Phase 2, due in autumn 2026 with no exact date announced yet, will add 29 new stores to the LUCUA Characters World zone on floors 10F to 13F, and the stated endgame is a full opening in 2027 with more than 40 character shops and 35-plus restaurants. JR West SC Development, the operator, is explicit about the ambition: the largest character zone in Japan. The first phase is deliberately restrained, mostly moving established Daimaru tenants and existing Ichiroku Gourmet restaurants into the new LUCUA SOUTH structure without adding much new. The five character shops that reopened on 13F in Phase 1 are the anchor, and they already draw heavy weekend traffic: On 14F to 16F, the LUCUA SOUTH DINING restaurant zone carries over 28 restaurants that were previously part of Daimaru or the Ichiroku Gourmet floor. The names span Edo-mae unagi at Kawasho, Sushisei, Tatsudon at Henmi, tempura at Yotaro, soba at Kasane, and a line of family restaurants on 16F including Saint Marc, PIER30GRILL, and Miyazaki shabu-shabu at Kirine. If you have been eating at Osaka Station City before, most of those restaurants are the same operators, now under the LUCUA SOUTH banner. The shift is structural, not culinary. Phase 2 is where the character zone takes shape. JR West SC Development has confirmed 29 new stores will open in autumn 2026 across the 10F to 13F floors, integrated into the LUCUA Characters World zone. Six have been publicly named so far, and the first of them is the most significant for Kansai visitors: The remaining 23 stores have not been named publicly as of mid-July 2026. JR West SC Development has said the full opening in 2027 will total more than 40 character shops, so another roughly 11-plus stores will be added in stages after Phase 2. The architectural and commercial play here is to consolidate scattered character retail, much of it currently in Daimaru Umeda, into a single contiguous zone that occupies about 12,500 square metres, roughly 75 percent of the LUCUA SOUTH building, dedicated to characters, pop culture, and amusement. The LUCUA SOUTH DINING zone on 14F to 16F runs 28 restaurants in Phase 1 and is set to reach more than 35 restaurants by the 2027 full opening. The 2027 expansion will focus on 14F and 15F, with family-targeted restaurants that complement the character zone. The 16F floor, which was previously operated as Osaka Ekiue Dining Ichiroku Gourmet by JR West Station City, has been transferred into the LUCUA SOUTH operation as part of a broader JR West group synergy. The practical effect for visitors is that the dining floor and the character floor are now under one operator, so opening hours, campaigns, and floor directories are unified. Hours differ by floor category, which is the one operational detail worth knowing before a visit. The retail floors 10F to 13F run 10:00 to 20:00. The dining floors 14F to 16F run 11:00 to 23:00, with some restaurants operating different hours. Entry to LUCUA SOUTH is free, and the building is directly connected to JR Osaka Station, so there is no transit step from the station platform.

How this fits with the existing LUCUA Osaka
LUCUA SOUTH is the third building in the LUCUA Osaka complex, joining the existing LUCUA east building and LUCUA 1100 west building. The existing twin malls are covered in detail in the Lucua and Lucua 1100 shopping guide, which focuses on the fashion and lifestyle retail in those two buildings. LUCUA SOUTH is a separate proposition, built around character retail and dining rather than fashion, and it is designed to draw a different visitor mix: families with children, character-goods collectors, and pop-culture fans. The combination of the three buildings, all connected via JR Osaka Station, gives the LUCUA Osaka complex one of the largest combined retail footprints in any Japanese station complex.
For visitors planning a first trip, the routing is straightforward. If your interest is character goods, head straight to LUCUA SOUTH 10F to 13F. If your interest is fashion, the original LUCUA and LUCUA 1100 are the better targets and are a short walk through the station. The LUCUA SOUTH dining floors are worth knowing as a dinner option even if you are not shopping for characters, because the 14F to 16F restaurant line-up is now the single largest sit-down dining cluster directly above Osaka Station.
