Alpen, the Nagoya-based sporting goods retailer, opens its first Kansai flagship store, Alpen OSAKA, on August 7, 2026 in Umeda's Chayamachi district. The store fills six floors of the YANMAR FLYING-Y BUILDING (2-1-32 Chayamachi, Kita-ku, Osaka) — basement 2 to ground 4 — and Alpen is positioning it as the largest sports-culture hub in Kansai. The location sits on the former UniQlo and GU site in Kayabashi, steps from Hankyu Umeda Station and the HEP Five ferris wheel, putting it inside the densest cluster of fashion and youth-culture malls in the city.
Six floors of sports, golf, and outdoor gear
The floor layout is sport-by-sport rather than brand-by-brand. Basement 2 is golf clubs, basement 1 is used clubs plus golf shoes and bags, ground floor is running and sports shoes, 2F covers casual wear plus basketball, volleyball, swimming, and fitness, 3F is football, baseball, tennis, badminton, and table tennis, and 4F is outdoor wear, backpacks, and trekking. The golf setup is the deepest, with new and used clubs on separate floors and a fitting zone. Alpen has 2,686 billion yen in group sales (FY2025) and operates golf courses, ski resorts, and fitness clubs, so the golf range benefits from that vertical integration.
Hours are 10:00 to 21:00 daily, matching the Chayamachi malls rather than the early-closing department stores. The address — 1-32 Chayamachi — is the same block as HEP Five and NU Chayamachi, so visitors can do a sport-gear run and a fashion run in the same evening. The store is the first Alpen flagship to land in Kansai; previous Kansai presence was mid-size Alpen and Sports Alpen branches in suburban locations.
Try-before-you-buy courts and pitches
The differentiator Alpen is pushing is "experience value" — try-on courts and pitches built to pro-game spec, not the carpeted test corners of standard sports stores. The running zone has a real-surface test track, the football area has a pitch-textured trial zone, and the basketball area has a court-floor hoop zone. The golf floors have indoor net bays with launch-monitor fitting. The stated goal is to make the store a community hub for Kansai sports culture, not just a retail box — Alpen explicitly says it wants to build a place where beginners and serious athletes get "stirred up" about sport.
Why this matters for Umeda visitors
Umeda has lacked a major dedicated sports store since the era of the old sports floors at Hankyu and Daimaru, which have since pivoted to fashion and character goods. Alpen OSAKA plugs that gap at scale — six floors, full-category, open till 21:00 — and it lands on the most redevelopment-heavy block in the city. The Umekita Phase 2 development, Grand Green Osaka, the LUCUA South character zone, and now Alpen OSAKA have turned the Chayamachi-to-Umekita axis into the busiest new-retail corridor in Osaka. For travelers, that means a sports-gear stop is now walkable from Osaka Station, where before it required a trip to a suburban Alpen or a department-store sports floor.
