Grand Front Osaka: The Umekita Complex Redefining Umeda Shopping
Walk north out of JR Osaka Station through the connecting pedestrian deck and you run straight into Grand Front Osaka, a cluster of towers that opened in 2013 as the first phase of the Umekita redevelopment. Three buildings hold roughly 266 shops and restaurants, an InterContinental hotel, office floors, and a residential tower. It is the project that pulled Umeda's center of gravity north.
North Building and South Building
The complex splits into North and South, each with a tower sitting above a low-rise retail podium. The North Building carries the heavier fashion load, with brands like United Arrows, BEAMS, and the Apple Store occupying street-level glass. The InterContinental Osaka hotel occupies the upper floors of Tower C, and the South Building leans into lifestyle tenants, interior design, and a large Tsutaya bookstore. Between the two, the Umekita Plaza, an open-air square, hosts pop-up markets and seasonal events.
Dining at Unshikai and the Umekita Floor
The seventh floor of the North Building is Unshikai, a dining zone of around 45 restaurants arranged around a central atrium. Options run from tonkatsu at Maisen to teppanyaki at Kisshintei and craft beer at Watering Hole. The floor stays open later than the retail below, generally until 11:00 PM, which makes it a reliable late dinner stop after the shops close at 9:00. Down in the basement, the Umekita Floor connects directly to Osaka Station, with bakeries, grab-and-go counters, and a Dean and DeLuca cafe that fills with commuters from early morning.
Shops Worth the Detour
Beyond the major flagships, a few tenants stand out. The Seiko Boutique on the first floor of the North Building is one of the few places you can handle Grand Seiko and Credor movements side by side. Bic Camera occupies the lower levels of the South Building for electronics. On the seventh floor of the South Building, BorneLund Asobi no Sekai is a children's play and learning space designed by the Japanese educational toy brand, popular with traveling families. The Knowledge Capital, a co-working and event space on the same floor, runs tech talks and design exhibitions that are usually free to drop into.
