About This Event / イベントについて
Tsuyunoten Shrine — known locally as Ohatsu Tenjin — is Umeda's historic local shrine, tucked into a quiet pocket of the commercial district a few minutes' walk from Osaka Station. Founded in the 10th century and dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, it is famous as the setting for Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Sonezaki Shinju love-suicide play. It is the neighborhood's destination for hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the New Year.
Over January 1–3, the shrine draws roughly 30,000 visitors for blessings and omamori amulets. The Saitansai (歳旦祭) ceremony is held at 11:00 on Jan 1, with free sacred sake (お神酒) served from midnight. A monkey show (猿回し) entertains visitors Jan 1–3. Note: there are no food stalls (屋台) due to the shrine's small grounds in the commercial district — a distinctly intimate, neighborhood affair.
