Wednesday 9 December 2026 is not another tree north of the station. NISHIUMEDA CANDLE NIGHT takes the office block west of JR Osaka, 16:00–21:00, candles from 17:00. Free. Rain moves the night to the 10th. If you start from the Sky Building you will spend the evening in the wrong corridor.
West Umeda is after-work pavement
PLACE for this district splits four ways. Tourists loop Sky Building, Umekita Park, HEP FIVE, Ohatsu Tenjin. Locals who work the west side leave through Hilton Plaza, HERBIS, Breezé, JP Tower Osaka, and the Mainichi building. The candle night is that second map. The committee is Hankyu Hanshin, Yoshimoto Building, Sankei Building, Mainichi Shimbun, and Japan Post Real Estate. Osaka Prefecture, Osaka City, and the chamber of commerce sit as patrons.
It started in 2005 as 100万人のキャンドルナイト＠OSAKA CITY. The June 2026 edition renamed it NISHIUMEDA CANDLE NIGHT. December 2026 is year 21. The idea is still a short dark, then fire you can walk. Partner towers switch lights down so the candles read. That light-off is the point. The gold trees at Grand Front stay on. This street goes the other way.
Park first if you want space
CANDLE JUNE, the long-time director, puts the large install in Nishi-Umeda Park. Students and Kansai makers line the streets. Paper-bag andon, a holdover from the old million-candle nights, still appear. Office workers fill the pavements from 18:00. Arrive nearer 17:00 if you want the park with room to stand. Concerts, a market, and workshops at HERBIS, Hilton Plaza, Breezé, and JP Tower were promised as follow-up, not as a finished timetable. Check nishiumeda-candlenight.com the week of the 9th.
JR Osaka west exit or Hanshin Umeda west. Do not start from Grand Front and hope the candles are "around here." They are not. The park sits on the office lawn, the one locals already use for lunch and skate, not the postcard north. Instagram is @candle_nishiumeda. Hankyu's indoor 9F market and the Sky Building plaza are other nights. If you only have 9 December, stay west. You can walk the gold trees on any other evening until February.
If it rains, come Thursday
The official line is simple. Rain on the 9th moves the night to the next day. Confirm on the site that morning. There is no indoor backup tree. If both days are washed out, wait for the committee post. Do not treat a mall atrium as the event.
This is the one winter night that belongs to the west. The Sky Building plaza, the Umekita gold, and Hankyu's 9F market are other rooms on other days. Hours and the rain rule live on the event page. This note is only which side of the station to stand on.
