About This Event / イベントについて

For one weekend each summer, the Grand Front Osaka underground convention center turns into a temporary castle museum. Osaka Castle Festival 2026 (第5回 大阪・お城フェス2026) is the fifth edition of TV Osaka's castle-focused expo, running Saturday August 8 and Sunday August 9, 2026, 9:30-17:30 at the Knowledge Capital Congre Convention Center on the B2 floor of Grand Front Osaka North Building. Tickets are ¥1,400 in advance (¥1,600 at the door) for adults, ¥800 advance (¥1,000 door) for junior and senior high students, and free for elementary school and under.

Grand Front Osaka towers above the Umekita plaza that hosts the Knowledge Capital Congre Convention Center, venue of Osaka Castle Festival 2026

The festival rides the recent nationwide castle-boom. Castle tourism offices from across Japan set up PR booths with regional castle maps, sightseeing tips, and local-history mascots — past editions have drawn exhibitors from Osaka Castle, Hikone Castle (a National Treasure, with mascot Hikonyan), Himeji Castle, Takeda Castle (the "castle in the sky"), Kawachi-Nagano, Iga, and the Siege of Sekigahara battlefield. The 2026 edition adds a special program on the three "internal-war periods of medieval Japan and Kawachi-Nagano" — the Genpei War, the Nanboku-cho civil wars, and the Sengoku period — curated with the Kawachi-Nagano City Board of Education.

The try-on armor display

A Japanese samurai armor (gusoku) on museum display, the kind shown and available to try on at the Osaka Castle Festival 2026 armor zone

The headline attraction is the "See, Wear, Feel Armor Display" (見て!着て!感じる 甲冑展示) — a hands-on armor zone where visitors can handle and try on full gusoku samurai armor with guides on hand. The display covers Edo-period gusoku construction, the lacquer-and-iron lacing technique, and the helmet (kabuto) typology that distinguishes regional schools of armor-making. It is one of the few places in central Osaka where you can put on real-weight armor and take photographs in it, rather than viewing armor only behind glass.

Paid forums and seminars

Three paid history forums (¥1,200 each, separate reservation required) anchor the academic program, each 90 minutes long and moderated by Kita-kyushu's Kudoyama Sanada Museum honorary director Hisashi Kitagawa. The lineup focuses on the 2026 theme of medieval Osaka and Kawachi castle culture:

  • Forum 1 (Aug 8, 10:20-11:50): "The Kusunoki clan's castle, Eboshigata Castle — Nankawachi castles part 1" with Yasuhiro Nakanishi (Kyoto College of Advanced Sciences), Hiroaki Ohta (Kawachi-Nagano City Board of Education), and Takaomi Ikoma (Hanazono University).
  • Forum 2 (Aug 8, 13:00-14:30): "Jinaimachi and jinya — Nankawachi castles part 2" with Yoshikatsu Yoshii (former deputy director, Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Museum), Yasuhiro Nakanishi, and Hiroaki Ohta.
  • Forum 3 (Aug 8, 15:10-16:40): "The castles of the Toyotomi clan" with Yoshihiro Senda (Nagoya City University / Nara University), Yasuhiro Nakanishi, and Tadayuki Amano (Tenri University).
  • Seminar (Aug 9, 11:30-13:00): "Hideyoshi's jinjo (siege castles)" — a single-speaker deep dive by Yoshihiro Senda on the temporary siege castles Toyotomi Hideyoshi built during his Kyushu and Odawara campaigns.

The festival also runs a packed stage schedule of free municipal PR presentations — a rotating cast of "omotenashi bushotai" (hospitality warrior troupes in costume) from Nagoya, Hikone, Sekigahara, Matsue, and Wakayama present their local castles in 40-80 minute slots across both days.

The photo contest and game tie-ins

Osaka Castle keep rising above its stone walls, the focal castle of the Osaka Castle Festival 2026

On August 8 at 15:40 the festival hosts the awards ceremony and judges' review of the All Japan Castle Photo Contest 2026, with castle photographer Yasuyuki Oka introducing the winning entries on a large screen and interviewing the prizewinners. A "Nobunaga no Yabo Shutsujin" (Nobunaga's Ambition) local game event runs across both days, and the Koei Tecmo booth offers hands-on with the long-running castle-siege game series that has become the festival's gaming partner.

How to plan a visit

Grand Front Osaka is directly connected to JR Osaka Station's north exit — follow the pedestrian deck north, take the escalator down to B2 inside the North Building, and the Congre Convention Center entrance is signposted. Allow 2-3 hours minimum for the PR booths and armor zone, plus 90 minutes for any paid forum you book. The forums fill up in advance, so reserve on the festival's ticket page early. Elementary-school-age kids go free and the try-on armor zone is the obvious draw for families — arrive in the morning when the armor queue is shortest.

The festival overlaps with the Sky Sunflower Garden on the Sky Building rooftop, the Hankyu Umeda rooftop beer garden, and the Ultra Heroes EXPO at Umeda South Hall and Hanshin Umeda, so a single August weekend in Umeda can combine castle history, sunflowers at 173 meters, a hero stage show, and a rooftop beer — all within walking distance of JR Osaka Station.
