Long-standing tempura counter in Shin-Umeda Shokudogai serving tendon, tempura sets and kamo nabe.
Shinkiraku is a tempura specialist tucked inside the historic Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, the atmospheric restaurant street that has been feeding Osaka since 1950. The East Branch operates from a compact counter-only space where diners can watch their food being prepared up close. The menu centres on tendon (tempura rice bowls), tempura set meals and kamo nabe (duck hot pot), with classics like prawn salt tendon and conger eel tempura featuring prominently. Lunch sets are competitively priced and the daily special selection rotates through options such as pork ginger, sashimi and the signature Shinkiraku set that combines tempura with a small kamo nabe. The surrounding Shokudogai itself is a destination, a labyrinth of tiny eateries beneath the railway tracks of JR Osaka Station that offers a wonderfully nostalgic, postwar Osaka atmosphere. Shinkiraku is closed on Sundays and serves dinner until late, making it a solid pick for an evening meal. For an authentic taste of old Osaka served in one of the city's most characterful food streets, Shinkiraku delivers tempura with genuine pedigree. Go Umeda and discover why this humble counter has earned its place in a beloved dining institution.Based on 305 Google reviews
