Standing-only kushikatsu counter since 1949 in Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, an Osaka institution for 70 years.

Matsuba Sohonten is a kushikatsu specialist that has been frying skewered meat and vegetables in the heart of Umeda since 1949, making it one of Osaka's longest-standing purveyors of this essential local dish. The original shop sits inside the Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, a cluster of nearly 100 small eateries and bars that grew up under the railway arches after the war. The format is pure Osaka: you stand at the counter, take freshly fried skewers from a silver tray as they appear, dip them in the communal sauce once, and pay afterwards based on the number of sticks you have consumed. The skewers range from classic beef to seasonal vegetables and offal, with prices starting from around 120 yen per stick. The standing-only style keeps things fast and convivial, making it a favourite for after-work drinks and quick meals alike. The strict no-double-dipping rule is a point of pride - if you need more sauce, you scoop it with a piece of cabbage and drizzle it over your skewer, a ritual that every regular knows by heart. For a kushikatsu experience that feels genuinely rooted in Osaka's post-war food culture, Matsuba Sohonten is hard to beat. Go Umeda recommends standing shoulder to shoulder with the regulars, grabbing a few skewers and a cold beer, and soaking in an atmosphere that has barely changed in over seven decades.
